Women's volleyball The volleyball team does a cheer for a great job well done after getting the bronze medal.

Congratulations to USA women's volleyball team for winning the bronze medal! They have had some close competitions with countries such as Japan and Ukraine on their quest for a medal in the Deaflympic Games.

Their opponent for the bronze medal was Italy. The game was best out of five and USA beat them with the score of 3-0. Key players included Ronda Jo Miller, Jenny Cooper and Pia Marie Paulone. USA women's volleyball will continue to do us proud in the 2009 Deaflympic Summer Games!

A glorious victory for the women's team, beating Sweden in order to get the silver medal.

USA women's team continued the second day and last three games in the teams tournament, their heavy competition being Chinese Taipei and Sweden. During the fifth game, USA was behind with only two pins, then they racked up the points during the sixth and final game. Lindy Decker bowled a 209, her second highest since the tournament started yesterday, and Sharon Rutherford bowled an amazing 233 but the women's team was ahead of Sweden but still 69 points behind Taipei at the end.

Head coach Carol Moers said of Rutherford: "Her scores really helped us beat Sweden by 20 pins. We were originally expected to get third place, but Rutherford found her line and the strikes just kept coming." The women's teams gathered to stand on the podium for the gold, silver and bronze medals and watch their countries' flags rise up. Winning the silver medal was a great way to wrap up the team morale and Deaflympics experience for the USA women bowlers.

Standout athletes include Patty Brothag who bowled the highest score of 263 and Decker for receiving the gold in singles' match and being in first place overall with points. She is the most consistent bowler and that helped her ranking. Rutherford comes in second behind Decker with overall points and helped pull up the women's team in the match that got them a silver medal for the women's teams match.

Women's soccer continues winning streak

USA women's soccer defeated Great Britain 3-0 on single goals by captain Erin Coppedge, Lindsey Dolich and Virginia Keeler. The USA women have been unbeatable, winning all their games by large margins. Dolich earned her first goal of the tournament while Erin Coppedge is the second leading scorer in the Deaflympics with 9 goals trailed by fellow teammates, Keeler with 6, and Katie Romano with 5.

The soccer game was one to watch since Great Britain is the team USA had to go up against to beat for a chance to enter the finals. Seems like the players had nothing to worry about. Their talent carried them through the game and the score ended with an impressive 3-0. The final game is on January 16 and the gold medal is just around the corner!

Team handball clinches a chance at gold!

photo: men's handball team goes for the gold tomorrow
Team handball's oldest and most loyal fan, Sean Moore's great aunt Mabel, poses with the team after their victory against Germany.

The men's handball team won against Germany in a closely heated game. Both teams hungry for the win gave the fans something to scream about. The USA team's defense was slow on the uptake however once they got started, this proved to be the winning strategy.

The first half ended with USA 14, Germany 10. After the second half, Germany quickly became frustrated with USA's defense and had a long, dry stretch without scoring a goal, giving USA as much as a ten-point lead.

Germany's frustration was also evident on Stefan Bergan's shirt because somewhere in the scuffle of making his eleventh goal, his shirt was ripped halfway down the front. USA beat Germany 24-22, clinching their chance for the gold! USA plays Croatia for the gold medal on January 15.
