A gutsy gold

Trevor Kosa won the gold in 1000m Sprint and received the honor from CISS Member Vojtech Volejnik.

The beginning of the Cycling 1000m Sprint saw a field of 26 drizzled down to 16 after the timed flying 200m sprint. All Americans except defending Gold champion Trevor Kosa were eliminated in the first round. Medal contender Paul Wood, a legendary Deaf cyclist in his fifth Deaflympics, was eliminated in the first round despite a failed protest that a Svokenia rider had cut him off after the 200m start. Rules state that the rider must stay clear of the other after the 200m start.

Germany came strong with a sole representative, clocking in with the fastest time in the second round. The final match saw Kosa losing the first of three to the German. After changing strategies, Kosa was able to muster out a gutsy performance by using the same maneuver twice; jumping a dangerous 180 degree corner to open the gap. Trevor Kosa’s gold is the first of the games.

Unfortunately, their rally ended when Germany made surprising turns, winning 3-0.

Women's soccer plays first game in Deaflympics history

The women's soccer marks an inaugural event for the Deaflympics in Melbourne. USA played against Denmark for their opening game. Katie Romano scored the ball into the goal as soon as the game began. The score went up to 2-0 with Romano again scoring her second goal. Then the Danish team scored a goal and Virginia Keeler fired back with a third goal for USA. The first half ended with the score of 3 to 1. In the second half, Erin Coppedge contributed with the fourth goal and Keeler scored again with the final goal. USA won 5-2 and it was a sweet victory.

USA men's basketball undeterred by Greece

Greece won the world deaf basketball championship in 2002 but USA was fearless as they faced them in the opening game. The men's team contains of star-studded, experienced players such as Brian Bippus, Jeremias Valencia, Jonathan Valencia, Robert Haney, Jamel Bradley, Brendan Stern, Sekoe White and Bradley Miller.

By the end of the first quarter, USA was leading 28-20. Greece never was able to catch up to that close of a score during the remaining duration of the game. Bradley, in the second quarter, scored a three-pointer and bringing USA into a safe leading score of 39-24. Team coordination and communication was evident when Bradley stole the ball from Greece and handed it to Valencia upon a quick swift, who then jumped up and slammed the ball into the net, securing 45-30 before the second quarter was even over.

In the fourth quarter, Bradley made another three-pointer. Three-pointers during the game seemed to be a walk in the park for him. Miller also contributed to the game with an impressive 13.5 points and 8 rebounds. The final score was a 102-88 lead over Greece.

Soccer game against Turkey cuts close

Due to a forefeit by Ghana and putting USA 3 team points ahead, they played their first live game against Turkey. Affected by strong winds, Turkey scored the lone goal at 35 minutes of the first half. In the second half, the tide turned in the favors of the USA team connecting on well played passes and controlling the ball forward. A corner kick by Larry Manning deflected off the Turkish keeper and resulted in the USA men scrambling in the goal box and Mark Sorokin scored the ball in.

With the game at a 1-1 draw, Turkey retaliated towards the end of the clock. The same Turkish who scored the first goal sped through the defense punching in his second goal of the game. For the remaining six minutes the USA team worked forward without figuring out a scoring solution. Turkey won 2-1. The next game is USA against Italy, and that will determine whether the USA men's soccer team will advance to the finals.
